To most photographers their camera is their pride and joy giving as much pleasure to some as cars do to others.

But is you camera really the secret to success?

Or is it your biggest enemy?

Of course you must learn your camera craft and know how to get the best out of it but never forget that to your subjects it is an object that creates apprehension at the least and fear at the worst. People do not like being photographed often comparing the process to going to the dentist!

The skill of a Portrait photographer is to get the subject to forget they are being taken and get their minds onto something else.  The best lighting set up, brilliant posing etc will not ensure a great portrait. For that you have to get a great expression and the camera can often prevent that being achieved.

In a portrait expression is everything. One of the Secrets of Success.
